Attaglance: Another double for Malcom Jefferson

Trainer Malcolm Jefferson achieved a remarkable 'double-double' when Attaglance followed up his Cheltenham victory in the John Smith's Daily Mirror Punters Club Handicap Hurdle at Aintree.

Just 24 hours after stablemate Cape Tribulation completed the rare double, 14/1 chance Attaglance showed great tenacity to win another competitive handicap under Harry Haynes.

The young jockey was always prominent on last month's winner of the 'Martin Pipe' and was produced at just the right time by Haynes in a competitive heat.

Los Nadis and Act Of Kalanisi duelled for the lead throughout but were threatened by the eventual winner and strong-travelling trio Cape Dutch, It's A Gimme and Tour 'DArgent turning for home.

It's A Gimme (7/2 favourite) blundered his chance away at the second last to leave Tour D'Argent (8/1) and Attaglance to fight out the finish.

Level over the last, it was Attaglance who found extra on the run-in to provide Jefferson with another remarkable victory by a length and threequarters, with Los Nadis (66/1) plugging on bravely to retain third place agead of Saphir River (33/1).

"This horse has done remarkably well this season and there's not many who win four handicaps in a year," said the winning trainer.

"He was never on the bridle but he just stays and gallops. For two horses to win at Cheltenham and again at Aintree is unbelievable."

"Both came out of Cheltenham in great fettle and the extra week in between has definitely helped."

"All credit has to go to the horse and to Mr Jefferson, to be honest," said Haynes. "It was a brilliant training performance. To go to Cheltenham and win and also come here and win - not many horses do it.

"I couldn't claim in this race, so effectively he was carrying 8lb more than at Cheltenham. He's all guts and determination as he never travelled a yard today.

"I thought I would be struggling to complete the race turning down the back as he was off the bridle, but he wants it so much."
