Hawaafez made almost every yard to claim the JLT Aston Park Stakes at Newbury.

The four year old filly was sent out in front by Kieran O'Neill in the extended one mile five furlong Listed contest and crossed the line four lengths clear of Meganisi to continue the resurgent form of Marcus Tregoning.

Wearing the second colours of owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, O'Neill was content to plough a lone furrow in the straight, sticking to the far side rail as Meganisi led the remainder of the field down the centre of the track.

Meganisi wandered off a true line in the closing stages but managed to repel the late challenge of Nehaam who was wearing the winning owner's first silks with Ibicenco back in fourth.

Winning Debut

Ibicenco had been sent off as favourite to make a winning debut for Luca Cumani who was seeking his second successive win in the contest but the German import never really looked happy.

He did, however, do his best work in the closing stages when staying on past beaten horses and may prove capable of better in time.

Tregoning said: "She's a nice mare and we're very lucky to keep her this year.

"She's needed the time to get the strength and Sheikh Hamdan owns a lot of huge horses - they just need a bit of time.

"She's in the Ascot Gold Cup but I don't know if they will let me go that route, but she's a pretty decent filly and goes on any ground."
