Sir Michael Stoute completed a notable Sandown double as Labarinto held on to register a thrilling win in the Piper Heidsieck Champagne & Levy Board Handicap.

The four-year-old had proved to be frustrating after showing plenty of promise early in his 2011 campaign but was gelded since his last start and proved a different proposition here.

The 16-1 chance was always traveling strongly under George Baker and quickened clear of his rivals approaching the furlong pole.

It proved to be a decisive mood despite the late surge of Prussian (10-1) which carried him to within a head of the winner at the line.

Tinshu (33-1) and Colour Guard (20-1) filled the minor placings.

Stoute said: "Gelding him has clearly worked. He wasn't colty but he went to York last time and lost the plot - he got very upset. We were waiting to see how he did here, but there are plenty of races left for him."

The trainer was on target earlier on the card with Dank in the Atalanta Stakes.
