The New One: Produced a near faultless debut

The New One produced a sparkling performance on his hurdling debut at Newton Abbot on Monday.

A smart performer in bumpers, the four year old was sent off at cramped odds for the Newquay Zoo 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle but never gave his supporters an anxious moment as he strolled clear to record a 26 length success.

Market rival Roger Beantown closed up on the approach to the home straight but Sam Twiston-Davies let out an inch of rein and the King's Theatre gelding immediately bounded clear of his tiring rival who was returning from a lengthy absence.

Big Plans

The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained winner had won his first two starts in National Hunt Flat races before finishing a creditable fifth in the Champion bumper at Cheltenham.

He capped that performance on his final start of his first season's racing when winning the Grade Two bumper at Aintree's Grand National meeting in April and connections will be hopeful of returning to both festivals in the spring of 2013.

The winning trainer said: "I was a bit nervous beforehand, it's horrid when they are meant to win as a lot can go wrong.

"We said before if nothing goes on to make the running, he's the best horse in the race. I thought he jumped well for his first time in public - he's only four and it was his fifth race. Hopefully he'll be at the first big Cheltenham meeting."
