Rainfall beats Red Jazz in the Jersey Stakes.

Rainfall beats Red Jazz in the Jersey Stakes.

Rainfall battled on gamely to hold Red Jazz in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

These two had the race to themselves virtually throughout the seven furlongs, and kept the rest of the field at bay.

Ryan Moore settled the 8-1 scorer in front, but Mark Johnston's three-year-old was soon joined by Red Jazz.

They gradually drew away from their rivals, but Rainfall - the only filly in the field - pulled out more to land the spoils by a head.

Rock Jock was third, another three and three-quarter lengths away.

Johnston said: "I didn't realise she had broken the track record. "Sheikh Mohammed was just saying it was a good race for fillies but I hadn't realised that.

"I'd looked at the race over the last five years and thought this was a tall order, but she's done nothing wrong since she came to us.

"She's taken big jumps from a maiden to a Listed race and then to this. She's very straightforward and genuine to train.

"I wouldn't know where she'd go next, it's all come very quickly for her."

Barry Hills, trainer of Red Jazz, said: "He's run very well, but drifted to the right and the other horse stayed on.

"He will have his day and it was a good performance as the winner is an improving filly.

"Longer term, he'll go to Hong Kong next year for his owner but he'll need to be a year older before doing that.

Tracey Collins said of Rock Jock: "I'm delighted. He travelled over well and showed good form.

"It's all down to Mr (Jimmy) Long (owner) who wanted to bring him here as I thought he was a six-furlong horse, but he said to try seven.

"We'll have a discussion about where to go next, but his long-term target is the Golden Shaheen in Dubai next March as that is where Mr Long is based."
