Fallon: Struck aboard newcomer for old boss

Tales Of Grimm held off favourite Firdaws to win division one of the Don Deadman Memorial European Breeders' Fund Maiden at Newbury.

Firdaws is a daughter of Eswarah, who trainer Roger Varian's former boss and mentor Michael Jarvis saddled to land the 2005 Oaks.

She has presumably been showing at home that she has inherited plenty of her mother's ability, as she was sent off the 11-10 favourite to make a winning debut.

She travelled strongly in the centre of the pack before being unleashed with a withering late run by Richard Hills.

But Sir Michael Stoute's Tales Of Grimm (11-1) was already in full flight under Kieren Fallon and just held off the market leader by a fast diminishing head.

Fallon impressed

Barry Simpson, racing manager for owner Sir Robert Ogden, told Racing UK: "Kieren thought he was one of the nicest moving horses that he's sat on for some time.

"He went to post extremely well and in the race he broke well. Kieren was very pleased with the way the horse performed.

"We've always thought he had some ability, but you never know until you get out on a racecourse what that level of ability is. Sir Michael has been reporting that the horse has been working quite nicely.

"I don't think we have any exciting plans. It's just nice to have a horse who looks as though he has a lot of potential.

"If Sir Michael feels he's ready, we'll put him in some of those better races at the back end of the season."
