Richard Hughes: Enjoyed an armchair ride on Maureen
The odds-on favourite Maureen ran out an easy winner of the Princess Margaret Juddmonte Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.
Richard Hannon's filly had been deemed by many to be an unlucky loser on her latest start in the Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket and she atoned for that luckless run in facile fashion.
Settled off the rail in third by Richard Hughes, she could be seen travelling strongly on the heels of Hoyam and was asked to lock horns with two furlongs to run in the six furlong contest.
The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor soon mastered the Queen Mary Stakes runner-up and hit the front before the furlong marker.
Sandreamer emerged from the pack to give chase but never looked like getting to the leader who only needed to be ridden out by Hughes to score by a little over two lengths.
"I know people have said she's small, but she's a good mover and a good-looking filly," said Hannon's son and assistant, Richard jnr.
"If she is just a two-year-old, she's one of the best two-year-olds around. She'll probably go on to the Lowther Stakes and then the Cheveley Park."
