Richard Hughes: Listed winner at Salisbury

Winning Express (10-3) produced a strong late run under Richard Hughes to win the Listed Country Gentleman's Association EBF Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury.

Ed McMahon's grey daughter of Camacho found a nice gap approaching the furlong marker and once in the clear, soon put good distance between herself and her rivals as she crossed the line with a one and a quarter length advantage to make it two wins out of two.

The front-running El Manati took the field along at a decent clip but faded inside the distance as Jadanna and Graphic Guest kept on well from off the pace to fill the frame.

Spanner In The Works

McMahon said: "She's a nice filly and they've gone a good pace, which has made it a true test.

"Richard just threw a spanner in the works and said that he thought she would get seven furlongs, but we were eyeing a Group Three at Ayr, the Firth of Clyde, at the end of the month - it depends on the ground because it can get soft.

"Some horse are very good at two and go on at three, but some don't. However, I would hope she can emulate Astrophysical Jet who won a couple of Group races later on for us."

Hughes had only come in for the winning ride as the replacement for Franny Norton, who was stood down for the day after providing a breath sample which was found by the stewards to contain alcohol in a concentration above the permitted threshold for riding.

The matter was referred to the British Horseracing Authority.

Norton was given a 40-day ban last year for failing an alcohol test at the higher level and stipendiary steward Marcus Weedon said: "He was over the allowed limit on his first and second tests - the second is done within 15 minutes of the first.

"All we do is stand them down for the day, and he will have to face a BHA disciplinary panel."
