Up (3-1 jf) got the better of a battle with Caponata in a close finish for the Group 2 Irresistible Jewel Blandford Stakes at the Curragh.

Aidan O'Brien's daughter of Galileo had never won previously over the 1m2f trip, but she saw it out readily to scramble home by a short head from joint-favourite, Capanota.

Manieree attempted to make all under Niall McCullogh and the four-year-old looked to have given herself a plausible chance of stealing the prize but she began to struggle badly inside the final furlong, and the winner and second surged past.

O'Brien said: "She's a tough filly. I thought a mile and a quarter is as far as she'd want and she just made it.

"She's a filly for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf in America and I'm not sure she'd definitely have another run before as she's had a busy time."

Nahrain was best of the Brits in third. Roger Varian's mare stayed on stoutly in the closing stages without ever quite looking like getting there.

Varian said of the mare: "She ran a much better race today.

"If she hadn't shown anything today she was probably telling us something, but that gives me much more encouragement and she could be right there in the autumn.

"I might look at something like the big fillies' race at Woodbine."
