Orfevre produced a satisfactory performance to land the Qatar Prix Foy at Longchamp on his European debut.

Excitement has mounted behind the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe bid of the 2011 Japanese Triple Crown hero and his victory in this recognised trial for next month's showpiece will have done little to becalm the fever.

Christophe Soumillon initially struggled to settle the four year old as Anthony Crastus, aboard the pacemaker Aventino, set some modest fractions.

Soumillon, however, soon had the son of Stay Gold nestled on the inside and he got a dream run through as the weakening front-runner moved off the rail in the straight.

Perfect Job

Orfevre was kept up to his work to repel the persistent challenge of Joshua Tree but never looked like relinquishing lead as Marco Botti's charge, a winner over 15 furlongs last time, struggled to quicken.

Meandre had won a slowly run renewal of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on his penultimate start but also lacked the change of gear to land a telling challenge, finishing a length adrift in second, while Fiorente never featured.

Soumillon said: "I was very happy with the performance, the pace was a bit slow and he was a bit fresh but I just wanted to keep track of him on his first time at Longchamp.

"In two strides I got exactly what you need from an Arc de Triomphe horse. Hopefully he can improve a bit as he needs to improve to win an Arc but the trainer has done a perfect job so far."

Sky Bet were sufficiently impressed to shorten the winner to 4-1 from 5s for the Arc.
