Mince edges out Soul

Mince edges out Soul

Mince maintained her progression with a fifth win of the year and her first in Group Three company with a hard-fought triumph in the John Guest Bengough Stakes at Ascot.

Roger Charlton's three-year-old filly had to dig deep to hold the five-year-old gelding Soul after a ding-dong battle.

These two were always in the front rank with James Doyle keen to make the most of Mince and the 9-4 favourite prevailed by a head. Eton Rifles was three-quarters of a length away in third place.

Doyle said: "Her improvement continues. She was so tough there.

"I just tried to keep her in a rhythm and not ask her too many questions on that ground.

"Soul just edged me a little bit and I had to ask her to quicken. At first I thought we were snookered, she didn't pick up straight away, but she's so tough and she ground it out good.

"She's won despite the ground. It just shows she's class."
