Quentin Collonges recaptured best form to win at Doncaster
Quentin Collonges bounced back to make almost every yard in the William Hill Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster.
Henry Daly's grey had been well beaten on his latest start at Warwick confirming his connections' long-held opinion that he couldn't act on soft ground and his team had to be patient through the wet winter months.
With the sun drying the ground out, however, they enjoyed their day in the sun on Town Moor where their nine-year-old had won two of his previous three starts.
Ridden by Andrew Tinkler, he jumped for fun at the head of affairs and, despite slight mistakes at the last two fences, had enough in the tank to see off Mr Moss who was produced with a perfectly timed late challenge by Paul Moloney.
His task was made easier by the early departure of leading fancies Night In Milan and Join Together with the former falling and nearly bringing down the Ruby Walsh-ridden favourite.
Third place was filled by James Ewart's Beneficial Reform who had chased the winner throughout and, although left behind by the front two, kept on well for minor honours.
"I've been trying to win this race for a while," said Daly.
"He's tiny but tough and is a pleasure to train and is as hard as nails. The tongue strap helped today and I'd imagine he'll have another entry in the Scottish National."
