Sue Smith: Won the Grade Two hurdle at Kelso

Sue Smith's decent run of form continued as conditional jockey Jonathan England enjoyed the biggest success of his career in the Premier Kelso Hurdle.

Mwaleshi, a 16/1 chance, was in front from the start and although favourite Eduard threw down a determined challenge from the second-last flight, Mwaleshi was equal to the task and held on bravely to score by three-quarters of a length.

Brick Red was 21 lengths adrift of the first pair as he trailed home in third.

England, the younger brother of fellow rider David England, was unable to take advantage of his claim because of the Grade Two status of the race.

The winner appeared to finish distressed, but winning trainer Sue Smith was able to give an upbeat bulletin soon afterwards.

"He was fine quickly afterwards as he we loosed his girth off, got a bucket of water on him and he's fine now," she said.

"He's a keen, freegoing sort of horse who gives his all. He's tough to pass when he gets in front.

"Jonathan gets on well with him. He rides him at home and knows how to get the best out of him."
