Olivier Peslier: Rider of Pastorius

Pastorius produced a gutsy effort to post victory in the Group One Prix Ganay at Longchamp on Sunday.

The German Derby winner was content to sit in behind pacemaker, Point Blank and the Aga Khan's Mandistana as they went along a decent gallop in the early stages, and as the race began in earnest with just over a furlong to travel, he was joined by the Stephane Pasquier-ridden, Maxios.

Olivier Peslier refused to panic and he quickly saw off the attentions of his rival before going on close home to confirm victory.

Dunaden stayed on from the rear to be a never-nearer third under Jamie Spencer.

Giofra was sent off as favourite for the first Group One of the European season but having made headway with three furlongs to travel, the five-year-old failed to find as much as anticipated.

The winner has an invitation for the Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji on May 19 which connections will consider following his one-length victory.

"We are very happy and made the right decision in bringing Point Blank into the race as well which worked out fantastic," said owner and breeder Franz Prinz von Auersperg.

"It was a great victory because what we didn't know where we stood what with it being the first race of the year, but he has proved he is up to this.

"We have an invitation to Singapore, but we have to discuss what that would mean for the rest of the year. We will not plan too far away because we will take it more from the horse's situation.

"I would love to come to Ascot again but Mario is not convinced yet, maybe to the King George later, but we don't know yet.

"We will sit down and take it step by step."

Elsewhere on the card, the two Group 3 races - the Prix Vanteaux and the Prix de Barbeville went the way of Andre Fabre and Maxime Guyon as the pair scored with with Esoterique and Last Train.
