Rex Imperator (red) storms clear in the Stewards' Cup
Rex Imperator (12/1) won the Robins Farm Racing Stewards' Cup in decisive fashion at Glorious Goodwood.
The William Haggas-trained four-year-old Rex Imperator was always travelling well and made a strong move for home a furlong out. From there he stretched away to win very comfortably for jockey Neil Callan.
Over two lengths back in second was 66/1 chance Ajjaadd for Ted Powell and William Twiston-Davies, whilst Burwaaz (25/1) hugged the stands rail on his own and ran a blinder in third for Ed Dunlop and Paul Hanagan.
Fourth home was Brian Ellison's Racy (16/1), just ahead of the well-backed Ninjago who stayed on late in the day for a never-nearer fifth.
Callan, who had recommended the horse for action in Dubai in the winter, said: "This means a lot. He jumped smart, William said to ride your own race, to sit on him, wait for that burst and use him late.
"He's quickened like the Group horse I thought he was."
Haggas was at home in Newmarket, but his wife Maureen said: "Gary Witheford (who specialises in horses with behavioural problems) had him for a month before he came to us and has done an unbelievable job with him.
"Neil actually bought him for the owner, it's really a team effort and I'm thrilled to bits."
