Angels Will Fall beats Steps to win the Portland
Angels Will Fall (16/1) narrowly denied Steps in a typically competitive Ladbrokes Portland Handicap.
The field split into two in the early stages of the five-and-a-half-furlong affair but it looked as if 11/2 favourite Steps would land the money for the in-form Roger Varian as he burst through the centre.
Bottom-weight Angels Will Fall, trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by Robert Winston, was right on the stands' rail and it seemed to help her as she made up the ground and got the nod in a tight photo finish, the official winning margin being just a nose.
Winston said: "I didn't think I'd won, she just pricked her ears at the cameras near the line and stopped a stride. I was maybe fortunate to be on the stands side but I thought she would run a big race in this ground.
"She's always had a lot of potential and things have dropped right today."
Hills said: "It's great and she enjoyed the ground. She always seemed to have a nice position and when a nice gap came she took it.
"She won a Group race last year, but it took her some time to come to herself this spring. We gave her a bit of a break and she ran well at York last month, but the ground was too firm.
"She's in at Ayr (Gold Cup) but we've got Shropshire for that, so we might go for some more black type with her."
