Oscar Rock winning at Wetherby
Oscar Rock survived a mistake at the last hurdle to put down his marker for better contests in the future with an authoritative win in division one of the Watch Racing UK on Sky 432 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle at Wetherby on Friday.
The five-year-old showed great potential last campaign when trained by Harry Fry, winning two bumper contests at Newbury - the latter of which worked out very well with the first two in the Aintree Champion Bumper coming out of it.
Consequently, hopes were high for the Oscar gelding on his debut for Malcolm Jefferson, with punters sending him off as the 8/15 favourite for his first assignment over timber.
He didn't disappoint under Brian Hughes, travelling well on the front end throughout before powering away from his rivals up the straight.
Collective breaths were held in the stands as he jumped the last awkwardly, but Hughes regathered his mount to saunter home by 19 lengths.
Sky Bet cut him to 10/1 from 12s for the Neptune Investment Management Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and spokesman Michael Shinners said: "Oscar Rock is clearly a useful tool and we were impressed enough to trim him to 10/1 for the Neptune.
"He's done very little wrong bar his mistake at the last but hopefully we'll learn more about how good he could be on his next start."
