Rolling Aces: Maintained Paul Nicholls' fine run in the race
Rolling Aces gave trainer Paul Nicholls a sixth successive success in the Powers Irish Whiskey Chase at Down Royal when capitalising on the final-fence fall of Argocat.
Always up with the pace, the 9/4 favourite was being hassled by Argocat when the Grade Two contest hotted up, but he came to grief at the last, leaving Rolling Aces to pass the post at his leisure.
Eased down close home by jockey Nick Scholfield, the seven-year-old was followed home by Toner d'Oudairies for the winning JNwine.com Champion Chase combination of Elliott and Cooper.
Scholfied, newly-appointed number two rider to the powerful Nicholls operation, said: "The pressure was on as I had to keep up the record in this race for Paul Nicholls.
"He was very well placed getting weight off some of the principals and being a bit higher rated.
"He's a lovely horse and probably a three-miler. He pricked his ears coming to two out and definitely accelerated into the last. That's the first winner in the new job."
Speaking from Wetherby, Nicholls said: "That was very good to watch. He was pricking his ears when he was out in front on his own, but that's just him.
"He's in the Paddy Power (at Cheltenham) and he did that nicely today so we will have a look. He's also in the John Durkan (at Punchestown) and I think that might be the race for him."
