Smad Place: Stayed on best to claim Newbury win

Smad Place proved himself a top staying novice with a taking performance in the IJF Anniversary Novices' Chase.

Alan King's 9/4 chance never let Sam Winner have his own way at the head of affairs and turned the screw exiting the back straight for the second time.

Mendip Express made several jumping mistakes and ultimately faded right out of it after failing to make any impression on the leading duo.

Robert Thornton sent Smad Place a length clear turning in and although Sam Winner stuck with him and jumped the final fence alongside, the winner's stamina kicked in and he stayed on strongly to record a two-length victory.

Mendip Express finished a further 31 lengths back in third, while Danners was well held in fourth.

King said: "We were so glad racing went ahead today as he needed a run before Cheltenham.

"He just needed the match practice and he was a bit sketchy early on in the race but he's a proper three-miler and was always going to find a bit more.

"He'll go straight there (RSA Chase) now."

Sky Bet clipped Smad Place a couple of points to 8/1 from 10s for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham in March, with Sam Winner 12/1 from 16/1.

Representative Michael Shinners said: "Both enhanced their chances in terrible conditions. The RSA looks wide open and we will learn more on Sunday at Leopardstown."
