David Pipe completed a double on the card

Ballynagour, a big gamble 12 months ago, ran away with the Byrne Group Plate at the Cheltenham Festival.

Victory provided trainer David Pipe and jockey Tom Scudamore with a double on the day following the Grade One victory of Dynaste and saw the eight-year-old make amends for disappointing in last year's renewal when sent off the 7/2 favourite.

The French import returned at 12/1 on this occasion and again proved to be the bookmakers' friend as he sunk a significant gamble on 5/1 favourite Colour Squadron who had to settle for second.

There were still half a dozen runners in contention at the second last with top-weight and front-runner Champion Court still on the premises but his early exertions began to take their toll.

Scudamore had crept into the race, however, and he fairly sprinted past his rivals up the hill to win in the style of a horse that had plenty in hand with the tongue tie that he was wearing for the first time working the oracle.

Scudamore said: "I really enjoyed that, it was fantastic. We always knew this horse had so much ability but he just wasn't finishing his races. He did today.

"He'd had bleeding issues so David has done an incredible job again, what a master. I'll enjoy today and see what tomorrow brings, I've got four reasonable chances tomorrow including The Giant Bolster in the Gold Cup."

Pipe said: "When he's good he's very good, as he showed when he won at Warwick. He's bled on occasions, so we don't do much with him and just give him an easy life.

"I probably shouldn't have run him here at the Paddy Power meeting, he wasn't fit enough at the time. Fair play to the owner, he was happy for us to bring him here fresh.

"I'm not sure what we'll do now, he's not a horse that takes too many runs so I don't think we'll be in a rush to do anything other than watch the DVD a few times."
