Nicky Henderson: Saddled Gaitway

Gaitway overcame his inexperience to win the valuable DBS Spring Sales Bumper at Newbury.

This race often throws up a smart sort or two with Montbazon successful in 2011 and Nicky Henderson had seen My Tent Or Yours beaten at 8/11 the following year.

It did look as though the lack of experience could prove crucial for Henderson's son of Medicean as he wandered around the track having cruised up to the long-term leader and favourite Tea For Two.

Barry Geraghty, however, was able to persuade the four-year-old to put his best foot forwards and the pair ran on to win by a length from Tea For Two who ran an admirable race, conceding 11lbs to his rival (without taking into account Lizzy Kelly's claim).

There were fully 34 lengths back to the third, Hurricane Vic, who looked as green as grass for much of the contest despite having already had an outing.

He was one of three runners from the Alan King yard (Springbok refused to settle early on) and he did no favours to his stablemate and mount of Robert Thornton, L'amiral David, who he just edged out for the minor honours.
