O'Meara: On the mark with Custom Cut
Custom Cut claimed a second successive Listed-race victory when taking the Skybet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes at Pontefract.
Formerly trained by Dermot Weld in Ireland, he is now in training with David O'Meara after changing hands at the sales for 95,000 guineas last autumn, and he had started to repay that outlay when landing a decent pot on soft ground at Windsor towards the end of June.
Here, Custom Cut carried on the good work in Yorkshire with a performance of some authority, despite fears that quicker conditions would not suit so well.
The 9/2 chance was always in a prominent pitch under jockey David Nolan as Tenor took the seven-runner field along at a fair gallop.
Although the pacemaker did not give up without a fight, Custom Cut breezed into the lead at the top of the straight and stretched his advantage to a length and a half at the line.
Neither Artigiano, the 5/2 favourite, nor Irish challenger Elleval were a factor in a race which was dominated by those closest to the speed.
Nolan told Racing UK: "My horse is straightforward. He gets every yard of the mile and he has a sustained gallop.
"It worked out perfect. He had that penalty (for winning at Windsor) but he's a tough horse and Pontefract suited him well.
"This horse is fit and well. It's good to get on him again and win.
"They were sort of worried about the ground - his best form is on soft ground - but you can get away with it at Pontefract sometimes."
