Verdict

ALFA BEAT completed a five-timer last summer and was kept fresh for Cheltenham's National Hunt Chase by Charles Bryrne. He failed to last out that four-mile trip and finished fourth but can gain compensation here. Shakalakaboomboom scored over three miles at Taunton before finding 2m5f too sharp on his next two starts. He's lurking at the bottom of this handicap and could spring a surprise, especially as Barry Geraghty chooses him over the progressive Forzy Origny. Frankie Figg blazed a trail to land the Grand Sefton here in November and conditions will suit but the biggest threat should emerge from Mon Parrain, who made a spectacular start for Paul Nicholls at Sandown though the handicapper has reacted accordingly with a 16lb rise. Fine Parchment and Dev are others to look out for in a wide-open contest.
