Verdict

Dermot Weld has won this a couple of times in recent years so Lake District, who is out of a Listed winner, should be respected. ALPINIST looked to be a bit of a handful on his debut at Leopardstown in August and never got going until much too late. He's a half-brother to eight winners including the brilliant pair Alborada and Albanova and entries in the 2000 Guineas and Derby here suggest he's well regarded. He's handed the vote though Piet Mondrian, who is out of the high-class mare Last Second and closely related to French 2000 Guineas winner Aussie Rules, is an obvious threat after a pipe-opener at Leopardstown in October.
