Verdict

Derby entry AL BIRUNI is taken to make a winning debut. A son of Kingmambo, Saeed Bin Suroor's colt is from a very good staying family including Irish Oaks winner Ebadiyla, and his trainer has a 36% strike-rate with his juveniles at the track in recent years. Fellow Godolphin runner Bridgefield shaped with promise at Newmarket and is far from discounted, as is Figaro who shaped with more promise at HQ than his finishing position might suggest. Kirthill is out of a mile winner, albeit at three, so the trip looks about right, whilst Levitate seems to be learning with each start and he may appreciate the slightly better ground this afternoon. Red Lover travelled well before being outpaced at Newbury and the worry is that a similar scenario might occur today although this track should suit. Others to mention include newcomer Steenbok, who is related to a variety of winners over many a distance, and Fadhaa who is out of a half-sister to Sakhee. Calaf is stoutly-bred and is another to consider given the step up in trip looks ideal.
