Verdict

The maximum field of 30 runners line up for one of the biggest betting events of the whole year and, with most of the fancied runners having favourable high draws, there should be few excuses for the likes of Fire Up The Band and Fayr Jag, who may have to play second fiddle to Patavellian. The selection may have found the going to quick for him when fifth behind Fayr Jag in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot but still lost no caste in defeat in fifth place and Roger Charlton's gelding showed he was better than that when making all to win the competitive Bunbury Cup last time. The form of that race has already been boosted and, under a 5lb penalty, Patavellian is taken to follow up. Fayr Jag, who had subsequent Group 3 winner The Tatling, and several of today's rivals, behind him in the Wokingham has to be respected but has gone up 6lbs since and may struggle to confirm superiority. A bigger danger to the selection may be Fire Up The Band. One of six representatives from the stable of David Nicholls, the son of Prince Sabo missed the Royal meeting on account of the fast ground and will have conditions to suit today. However, he is 9lbs higher than when winning at Newmarket when last seen in May and the combination of the higher mark and lack of a recent run is enough to put us off him. Stablemate Onlytime Will Tell ran well at Ascot last time and has to be respected in a race that should be run to suit but a middle draw is a worry as it is for another Nicholls inmate Pieter Brueghel. James Fanshawe's Frizzante has won both starts this term and remains open to further improvement but has been done few favours with a draw in stall three. A similar comment applies to recent impressive Newcastle winner Mutawaqed, who has a lightweight 8st 2lb to carry. Neville Callaghan's Colonel Cotton has claims from his high draw if staying the six furlongs but Patavellian, who has been drawn 27 of the 30 runners, has plenty in his favour and gets the vote.
