In depth

Verdict

His Nibs gained an overdue big handicap success when winning at Aintree last month but the Venetia Williams-trained gelding has more to off an 8lb higher mark today and preference is for Mirjan, who gets the verdict over Colourful Life. The last mentioned is feasibly well treated despite a 4lb rise for his latest effort and has to be respected on a course that trainer Mary Reveley has a fine record at. Kivotos should find this tougher than the race that he won at Ayr last time, especially as the handicapper has seen fit to raise him another 5lbs, while Springfield Scally has not won for some time and would probably prefer a softer surface. Chicago Bulls has been novice chasing but showed little sign of encouragement on his return to this grade when disappointing at Cheltenham recently and Court Shareef, while consistent, now seems to be a shade high in the weights. The vote then goes to Mirjan, who comes here in fine form following a smooth success at Wetherby on Sunday (for which he carries a 5lb penalty) and hails from a stable very much back in form now.
