    Verdict

CULTIVAR ran a good race at Chester and is taken to go one place better and score today ahead of Charming Man and Raqeeb in what looks a quality maiden. Barry Hills' colt ran a cracker behind Thaahira last time out and that was an improved run on his flop at Doncaster. Although Thaahira didn't frank the form at Goodwood on Wednesday it was a step up in grade so the form shouldn't be taken literally. This looks the selection's distance for now and with an official rating of 83 he sets a solid standard to aim at. There are some obvious dangers, including newcomers Charming Man and Queen's Scholar. The former is bred to be very smart but he has quickly been gelded and didn't see the track as a juvenile, while the latter cost 100,000 guineas as a two-year-old and she has plenty of winners in her family from all over the world. Sheiling didn't seem to like the undulations at Ripon on debut but then improved on that run when third to Kronful at Newcastle. She is open to more improvement still but the form of her latest run is yet to be fully tested and it was in a small field. Hail Tiberius has improved with each start and with his dam being a strong stayer this longer trip is likely to suit, Raqeeb was firmly put in his place at Pontefract by a smartly-ridden Godolphin runner but is not ignored here with that run under his belt, whilst Faith Jicaro has a first run for Nick Vaughan today and is not ignored on her first run as a three-year-old. Sumbe drops in grade having flopped in the Derby Trial at Lingfield a year ago but the yard's horses are in better form twelve months on, however the safer bet looks to be likely-favourite Cultivar.
