In depth

Verdict

Tastahil can overcome a low draw to beat Benny The Bat and Nothing Is Forever in the opener. Although Tastahil has been given the number one berth, there was enough to like about his debut at Newbury three weeks to recommend the son of Singspiel here. That introduction at the Berkshire track was in Listed company over seven furlongs, and in truth he was not beaten that far in sixth place, so with another furlong to travel in this weaker contest, he should make a bold bid. Entries in the Royal Lodge and Vodafone Derby reveal that he is expected to leave maidens well behind, and so despite the draw he can prove up to the task. Benny The Bat is also pencilled in for Epsom next year, and judged on his recent Newmarket bow, he too will come into his own over further. The form of his debut outing at headquarters has already been franked by one of those behind, Gold Option, and so Hugh Morrison's charge is one for the short-list. Nothing Is Forever, a half-brother to Decorated Hero, ran much too freely on his Sandown introduction, and needs to settle better before following, while Copernican and Dana Music should certainly be monitored in the market. Better things are expected of Tastahil though, and he gets the vote.
