In depth

Verdict

Perfidious gets a tentative vote in a wide-open finale, with hat-trick seeking Serramanna, San Deng, Summer Charm and Bowled Out all holding claims. There is no doubting that Perfidious was as game as a pebble when scoring at Folkestone last time, making most and rallying when headed to get the better of Cantrip. The first-time visor had the desired effect and as he still looks fairly handicapped compared to last year, Jim Boyle's seven-year-old should make a bold bid to follow up. There are plenty more in with chances though, including Serramanna. Her trainer was delighted when she won at Chepstow in August, pointing out that it would increase her value as a broodmare, so he will be even more happy now that she has scored twice subsequently, both times under Slade O'Hara. She can go close despite a rise along with San Deng who has been coming to hand steadily. Summer Charm bombed out over further at Nottingham but other than that has been most consistent, while Bowled Out was all out to hold Velvet Waters at Yarmouth and although set more to do, is dangerous to leave out. It really is a hard one to call, but Perfidious gets the nod.
