In depth

Verdict

Hawridge Prince seemingly showed improved form in a Listed Race at Windsor last time and is taken to make the most of his favourable mark back in a handicap, with Gatwick and Impeller rated the main dangers. The selection is set to go up 10lbs in future handicaps following his fine effort last time when splitting two 109-rated performers and, while a word of caution must be noted about horses returning to handicaps having run well in conditions races, Gerald Cottrell's four-year-old is hard to ignore under Frankie Dettori. Zetland Gold Cup winner Blue Spinnaker lost no caste in defeat at Doncaster last week but may struggle under 9st 10lb. Gatwick, who receives just 1lb from Mick Easterby's horse, has kept on improving all year but is likely to find life tougher today under a 5lb penalty for his win at Beverley last month. At the other end of the handicap, John Dunlop's Swagger Stick has not progressed as much as expected but cannot be ruled out off his lightweight. James Given's Telemachus goes well at this time of year but would probably prefer a softer surface and of more interest may be the Peter Harris-trained Sky Quest. The son of Spectrum has won his last two starts but has been punished by the handicapper as a result and this looks a lot harder than the race that he won at Goodwood last time. Courageous Duke is a consistent performer and is entitled to respect although a bigger threat may come from Impeller. Willie Muir's gelding was value for more than the neck winning margin would suggest when landing a classified stakes race at Epsom last time and remains feasibly well treated. Hawridge Prince has an obvious chance at these weights though and gets the vote.
