In depth

Verdict

A very tricky contest with some top yards represented; so Andaman Sunset is a far from confident choice to hold the likes of Azeer, Modernist and Fosool at bay. The last named is a nicely bred filly, whose pedigree is a mixture of speed and stamina. Mark Johnston is always patient with horses of this type and, although she is very much respected, the daughter of Pivotal is one to keep tabs on from here. Modernist is also a decent prospect on paper and it would not be the end of the world were she to be in need of the experience. Sir Michael Stoute is another trainer noted for a cautious approach and his representative can only benefit from her racecourse debut today. Azeer has not been seen since finishing eight in the Chesham at Royal Ascot last June; so obviously has to prove that he has trained on. The form of the Chesham has worked out quite well and, with Peter Chapple-Hyam's string in good form, a big run can be expected. However, Andaman Sunset has the edge in terms of race fitness and, with the step up in trip in his favour; the Red Ransom colt gets the nod. The state of the ground is a concern but, as it will be the first try on soft ground for most of the field, this may well boil down to a battle of the fittest when push comes to shove; with Andaman Sunset heading the list for us.
