In depth

Verdict

As the only previous winner in the line up Baan faces a stiff test in conceding 6lb to the rest. However, he showed a really professional attitude when he bolted up at Beverley and he is expected to follow up today. This more conventional track is expected to suit True Cause and, as he has the edge in terms of experience, the Godolphin-owned colt is expected to be able to fend off the well-bred newcomers, Tennis Star and Macorville, on this occasion. Both debutantes appeal on pedigree though and it will be worth noting where they go from here. True Cause stayed on powerfully after meeting trouble in running at Goodwood just over a fortnight ago. That run will have taught him plenty and he is very much respected. However, Baan makes far more appeal at this stage. The Diesis colt has reportedly been going great guns on the home gallops for Mark Johnston and can be expected to be as fit as a flea for this. That is backed up by the facts that Johnston had him entered for a Listed race at York Tomorrow as well as further engagements later in the week. Therefore, we can expect that Baan will be out again quickly whatever happens this afternoon.
