In depth

Verdict

Sloop JohnB can make the most of his experience at the expense of Drachenfels and Asian Tale to claim this opening maiden. Drachenfels represents Kevin Ryan who has had a good start with his two-year-olds. A fairly expensive purchase at 52,000 guineas, Drachenfels is closely related to three juvenile winners and the market should be watched closely. Pat Haslam¿s Asian Tale ran a promising race on debut, finishing a close third. He had to come on the outside to deliver his challenge and kept on well, in a race which looked quite decent. He will come on for the experience and can go well here. Richard Fahey has won a couple of juvenile contests already, and he saddles Sloop JohnB, a close second behind an experienced rival over the course and distance last time. That was a fine performance, and although the ground will be significantly quicker today, Sloop JohnB looks a useful type and can go one better here.
