In depth

Verdict

Sergeant Cecil lost no caste in defeat in the Gold Cup last time and is taken to resume winning ways dropped back to two miles and dropped back to Listed class today with the main dangers looking to come from Barolo and Vinando. The last mentioned ran a very creditable race in the Queen Alexandra last time but this looks no easier for Charlie Egerton's gelding and he looks booked for a place at best. Mark Johnston's Winged d'Argent is held by Barolo and the selection on running in the Gold Cup and there is no reason why the form should be reversed over this shorter trip, while Land 'n Stars needs to improve on all known form to trouble the judge. Sergeant Cecil was made Horse of the Year in 2005 following some fine performances and looks to have been found an ideal opportunity to open his account for 2006.
