In depth

Verdict

This is hugely competitive so you pay your money and you take your chance. We stuck the pin in and it landed on Port St Charles, with any number of the others capable of making their presence felt. Given that high numbers have a slight advantage on this track over today's trip on the prevailing going, then the selection is drawn reasonably in stall seven. He was unlucky in running at Sandown four days ago and the policy of striking while the iron is hot could well pay off for connections. Old stalwarts like Further Outlook, Dancing Mystery and Seven No Trumps are still capable of making their presence felt, while Signor Panettiere's close second at Bath last time gives him a shout. Devon Flame's winning run came to an end at Goodwood last time but lightly raced, cannot be ruled out of going well again. As we say, it's tricky so good luck if you are having a bet and Port St Charles is a far-from-confident nomination.
