All the pre-race hype here was for 1-2 favourite CONDUIT, a farcical winner off 85 in a handicap on Derby day at Epsom and an unlucky second when rallying late in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. The latter performance put him right into contention for the St Leger, and judging by the market support he was expected to enhance his claims for the Doncaster Classic in style here. He didn't, despite winning, as he was niggled along some way from home and had to pull out all the stops to beat Newmarket's Bahrain Cup winner Donegal by a neck. Andrew Balding's horse prefers softer ground, but this was a career-best effort and he is improving with each race now. That said, Conduit only just prevailed in a battle he looked like losing in the final furlong, and this performance was some way below what will be required on Town Moor. The extra distance looks sure to suit him there, but trainer and owner could have more viable alternatives for the race in Tartan Bearer and Patkai. One thing that should be said is the pace was muddling here, certainly not suiting the winner, or Aidan O'Brien's Hebridean, who took a daring run up the rail.
