A big field of handicappers and a brave run up the inner from YAMAL gained the day. Greg Fairley had to wait for the breaks up the straight but they came at the right time as he appeared on the scene inside the distance to trump topweight Swop and the in-form The Fifth Member. The winner gave Den's Gift a bump as he began his challenge and then hung off the rail into the third but showed a good attitude and could appear again at the meeting later in the week. Despite Luca Cumani's reservations about Swop's handicap mark, he ran a cracking race looking to have the race at his mercy and then rallying when YAMAL emerged to steal his thunder. Swop's stablemate Axiom posed a big threat but his run rather petered out while there are surely more races to be won with The Fifth Member in this sort of mood. Ivory Lace was a big eyecatcher in fourth after he hit top gear and was finishing his race with real purpose.
