FATHER TIME improved enormously here to land a moderate renewal of what is known as the Ascot Derby. Settled mid-division by Eddie Ahern, he was always travelling kindly and soon put the race to bed inside the closing stages. Out of a Sadler's Wells mare there was always a chance he would improve for a step up to a mile and a half, but quotes of 6/1 for the St Leger make little appeal at this stage. Plenty of the opposition had questions to answer here - Black Bear Island following a poor Derby run, South Easter after a setback, Free Agent after his Goodwood flop and the list could go on. Black Bear Island ran better than at Epsom, travelling well but finding little under pressure, while South Easter was often being niggled and could never get to the leaders. The one to take out of the contest is Your Old Pal, who stayed on from a mile back and was finishing better than anything bar the winner.
