The Oaks picture hardly became much clearer following this trial for Epsom but it would be unwise to dismiss the claims of AVIATE for the Classic despite the bunched finish and the average time. A head defeat of the 102-rated Gold Bubbles hardly suggests Oaks-winning form, but it doesn't tell the whole story as Henry Cecil's filly was much better than these. Her unbeaten record looked in real trouble two furlongs out as she was short of room and Gold Bubbles got first run on the outside. However, once Eddie Ahern found a clear passage up the rail inside the final furlong Aviate kicked into overdrive, showing an impressive burst of speed to get up on the line. Quotes of 8-1 for the Oaks look more than reasonable, and they are sure to disappear if connections confirm her for the race. Cecil said afterwards she may go for the Prix de Diane but it would be a surprise were she not to turn up at Epsom after this. Gold Bubbles improved for the step up in trip and ran a sound race for Jim Bolger, while Eleanora Duse stepped up on everything she had shown so far and was hampered close to the finish. Cabaret disappointed for Ballydoyle like so many of the Aidan O'Brien horses this season and this may not have been her true running as she is bred to appreciate middle distances. Pink Symphony came down the middle of the track and will appreciate further in time. Bikini Babe led the field along but was swamped by challengers in the straight and doesn't look good enough in this grade. The same can be said for Cracking Lass who stayed on to beat the weakening Cabaret and the disappointing Red Fantasy.
