The most interesting novice hurdle of the season so far and the most commanding of performances by SILVINIACO CONTI who came to take the lead approaching the third-last hurdle and never looked like surrendering his advantage. A recruit from France, he has the potential to go right to the top and looks out of the top drawer. He was electric at his hurdles here, as he was at Bangor previously, and it's that factor that makes him such an exciting prospect. Second spot went the way of the favourite Captain Chris. Connections won't be too disappointed with his run here despite losing his unbeaten record over hurdles as he just looked a little ring rusty when the pace quickened turning for home. As the winner moved off to chase the front-runner Frascati Park, he was caught a little flat footed and he lost his race there. To his credit he then ran on very well after the second last and although he never looked like catching the winner his attitude looked rock solid. With an official rating of 146, connections have no choice to aim for the top races this year but it might be that he does his best work when going chasing as he has the build for it. Frascati Park set off at a decent pace so he did quite well to finish (an admittedly distant) third especially as he pitched at the third last when challenged by the winner. Strange runs further back from Lidar who along with Shalimar Fromentro was never put in the race. They were detached and made no move to chase down the leading quartet of Frascati Park, William Hogarth, Silviniaco Conti and Captain Chris when the race started to develop down the back straight. In the end Shalimar Fromentro ran on pretty well to take a never dangerous fifth from (the similarly quietly ridden) Cavite Beta. The big disappointment of the race was Lidar who has a big home reputation but it just not doing it on the track. He should have relished this trip but connections may question the decision to try it for the first time at a grinding testing stamina sapping track like Chepstow.
