World Hurdle second TIME FOR RUPERT was pitched in at the deep end for his chase bow over a trip that was short enough for him but emerged from the test with flying colours. There was plenty of strength in depth to this novice chase with dual Grade 1 winner Reve de Sivola, the experienced pair of Hell's Bay and Othermix as well as the well regarded duo of Mr Thriller and Quantitativeeasing in opposition and there was no hiding place as Mr Thriller was given a positive ride from the front by Tom Scudamore. The field were fairly closely bunched as they moved out on to the second circuit; The Giant Bolster fell at the twelfth having already made one notable mistake and the field started to become strung out as the pace quickened. Reve de Sivola was a slow learner over hurdles and a mistake at the thirteenth at the top of the hill put paid to his chances but he did keep on well for fourth and should have derived considerable improvement from this initial effort. Time For Rupert was being driven by Will Kennedy as Scudamore tried to kick Mr Thriller into a clear lead but held his place on the inside, Othermix (who had raced prominently throughout) was still in close attendance and Hell's Bay travelled noticeably well in behind but Quantitativeeasing had cried enough having shaped well for a long way on his reappearance/chase bow. Mr Thriller couldn't find his feet and fell at the re-sited second last having flicked through the top of the fence and he was probably fighting a losing battle at the time as Time For Rupert's stamina kicked in. Paul Webber's charge jumped the last about half a length up on Hell's Bay but quickly left that rival behind as they met the rising ground to record a most impressive success by 8 lengths. This was the perfect start to a season where his long term aim will be the RSA Chase and Paul Webber envisaged that Time For Rupert would probably have two more runs before the Festival; his jumping was good in the main with the only slight negative a slightly awkward leap at the first ditch. The proximity of the 125-rated Hell's Bay raises some questions about the form but he was rated as high as 142 over hurdles and was held in high regard at the start of his career before losing his way and the 142-rated Othermix (who was a further 9 lengths back in third) is probably a better guide to the race.
