LITTLE JOSH led from pillar to post to record a remarkable success for Nigel Twiston-Davies and son Sam. A promising novice chaser who had had problems with his jumping last season but he was foot-perfect when dead-heating with Weird Al at Carlisle on his seasonal return and his fencing was nigh-on exemplary here with the exception of the twelfth as he reached for that ditch on the second circuit. There were other front-runners in the field but Little Josh was, rather surprisingly, allowed his own way out in front as others opted not to take him on. He made this into a really good test under a fine ride from his promising conditional and led from Edgbriar, Finger On the Pulse, Mad Max and Great Endeavour in the early stages with Long Run and Poquelin a couple of places further back in midfield with Mad Max and Great Endeavour given plenty of daylight on the outside. Tchico Polos took a heavy fall four from home at the fence at the top of the hill as Little Josh started to stretch the field but Mad Max and Long Run looked to be travelling very well about 6 lengths back with Great Endeavour still there on the outside in fourth with Poquelin creeping closer but the chasing pack never managed to close the gap however and he was kept up to his work to win by two and three quarter lengths. Mad Max found disappointingly little for pressure and faded to finish fourth, it's possible that he blew up on his return or that the breathing problems that have plagued this giant gelding resurfaced or he may simply be better on a flat track despite his good run in the Arkle. Dancing Tornado was well backed beforehand and ran on strongly from off the pace to snatch second and will do well when stepped back up in trip. Long Run was the talk of the town prior to the race but he was slow in the air over a number of flights and made several niggling mistakes which certainly didn't help his cause; it's possible that he may already need a stiffer test and he remains a horse of immense promise albeit unfulfilled at this stage. Great Endeavour didn't jump as well as he can but had every chance on his seasonal return; connections had put his improved form at the Festival down to the quicker ground and it's possible that the softer conditions caught him out whilst the lack of a run may also have told. Poquelin ran well in fifth until his big weight told whilst Sunnyhillboy made some late progress from the rear of the field and has a similar contest in him from his current mark; possibly back on a better surface. Catch Me had shown great promise in a truncated novice season but his jumping wasn't good enough in his first big field handicap but he remains on an interesting mark if he can improve with experience. Little Josh is expected to return to the track for the similar handicap next month.
