The lack of an out and out front-runner meant that this handicap was run at an unusually steady gallop and they raced strung out across the track in search of better ground with MENORAH, General Miller, Get Me Out Of Here and Manyriverstocross all on the outside as Issaquah and Bothy took them along in the early stages with Sure Josie Sure in third. The field were tightly bunched as they headed to the top of the hill but began to get stretched out as Bothy and Sure Josie Sure turned the screw coming down the hill at which point General Miller dropped out very tamely as though something was amiss. Tarkari fell three from home when in a second peloton of Sanctuaire, Any Given Day, St Devote, Astracad and Olofi and Sanctuaire was to depart at the next when looking held. Get Me Out Of Here had travelled quite keenly and weakened after the second last (rather as he had done at Ascot on his return) and now has something to prove. Sure Josie Sure dropped out around the turn for home as Menorah and Bothy settled down to fight out the finish and finished well beaten but she did enough to think that she can win races this season, particularly back against her own sex where she could be hard to beat. Menorah successfully conceeded the best part of two stone to the four year old despite not jumping as well as he can on ground that was far from ideal. Philip Hobbs felt that he had to go close from a mark of 151 if he was to be regarded as a Champion Hurdle prospect and his odds were slashed for the Blue Riband event following his triumph. He obviously impressed with the way he responded for Richard Johnson but equally impressive was the way that he travelled through the race. He can do even better in a strongly run race (which he may not get until March) and on better ground and is a live contender. It had looked as though Bothy's improvement had levelled out but he ran the race of his life and hails from a yard very much in form; it will be interesting to see where he goes next. Manyriverstocross was a bit sticky at the last and onepaced up the hill; he may need a step up in trip but remains on an interesting mark with the handicapper unlikely to raise him significantly for this run. Any Given Day had run out an impressive winner at Chepstow prior to this and will also appreciate being stepped back up in distance. Olofi finished 15 lengths clear of the field in fifth and ran a fine race for a four year-old; this wasn't unexpected as he did attract support and this run paid a compliment to his Chepstow conqueror Escort'men who could develop into an outside contender for the Champion Hurdle. He's a stablemate of Sanctuaire who shaped as though he was in need of the run.
