GRANDS CRUS was saddled with a 6lb penalty for a very easy win at Cheltenham six days earlier but was due to go up by 19lbs following that performance; he may well go up by as much again following this display. David Pipe had suggested that he was a three mile chaser in the making after Cheltenham but this was his first run over this distance and came in a much stronger race than at Prestbury Park. He was settled towards the rear on the inside by Tom Scudamore for the first part of the race but made smooth progress to race on the heels of the first group in about seventh with a circuit to run. He could be called the winner a long way from home with all of his rivals being ridden and the only question was whether his stamina would last out; there were no problems on that score, nor with the brush hurdles and Tom Scudamore never had to get serious with him as he cantered clear. He has earned a break after two runs in a week on testing ground and will find life much harder when he returns but he's clearly progressing at a rate of knots and could make his mark in Graded hurdles when the ground is testing. Barafundle confirmed the good form of Jennie Candlish's team and was the only runner to give the favourite a race; he had run well at this track over regulation fences in May and is progressing well, albeit not as quickly as the winner. His future will depend on how the handicapper views this run as a marked rise in the weights may continue to leave him vulnerable. Peveril is shortly to embark on a chasing career and appeared to need this first run of the season as he seemed to blow up before getting a second wind on his first run at this trip. This was only the seventh outing of his career and he can be expected to make his mark over fences. Ballyfitz's chasing career has stalled due to jumping problems but he has an engine and left a disappointing reappearance behind him returned to hurdles. The handicapper knows where he stands with him but he's capable of popping up if everything drops right in a less competitive race. Hills Of Aran falls into a similar boat, The Shy Man and Captain Americo struggled to cope with 11lb and 15lb rises for wins in weaker races but there was encouragement to be taken from the runs of Red Harbour and James De Vassy on their first runs of the season with the latter looking a non-stayer on his first run over three miles.
