An excellent renewal of this prestigious handicap saw an exciting finish and some top-class performances. DIAMOND HARRY had been pulled up in the RSA Chase, the only time that he had finished outside the first three in his career, but Nick Williams felt that they had made a mistake in delaying his first run over fences until January; his handler also reported that he had strengthened up and filled out during the summer. His only defeat in five runs at this track came at the hands of Big Buck's last December (the race that had delayed the start of his chasing career) and he has always been held in the highest regard. His jumping came unstuck at Cheltenham in March and that was a concern in a strongly run race but he put in an excellent display of fencing with his only semblance of a mistake coming at the last. He raced more prominently than might have been expected in a race run at a true gallop (the only contest of the meeting to be run in a time faster than standard) and yet still appeared to be on the bridle at the last and he found enough for pressure when challenged by Burton Port who never looked like getting past. The year younger (and much smaller) Burton Port produced a terrific terrier-like performance to go down fighting. He had surprised connections with his progress last season and the RSA Chase runner-up didn't let them down with a terrific run; his team may feel that they were a little unfortunate as he breasted the cross-fence and lost his position before turning for home. Denman moved strongly into contention and matched strides in the straight but was headed when making a tired mistake at the second last. This was a huge performance attempting to concede 26lbs to two of the best novices of last season and he will reportedly be put away now in preparation for a fourth crack at the Gold Cup. The Tother One ran an extraordinary race as the quirky performer was hard at work through much of the race having made a bad mistake at the second and was far from fluent at a number of his fences. He was racing in about eleventh turning into the straight but made up a huge amount of ground to snatch fourth from Niche Market who was having his second start for Paul Nicholls. Formerly with Bob Buckler, he has run some of his best races at Newbury but has the Grand National as his ultimate aim this season and connections will be delighted with this performance. Hey Big Spender was in trouble on the turn for home having set the gallop after the early departure of Madison Du Berlais who brought down Neptune Collonges and gave the grey no chance of staying on his feet. Pandorama was hampered by that pair, made a bad mistake at the next and was soon pulled up; it wouldn't be a surprise to learn that he knocked himself in the incident and he is worth another chance. Carruthers was never far from the firing line and ran well enough although a couple of mistakes didn't help his cause. Weird Al was given every chance to work his way into the race but couldn't go on when moving up to the back of the main group and was never in contention; this was his first run in a field larger than six over fences and he should learn from the experience. Taranis has proved difficult to train and ran just once last season; he travelled strongly into the straight before getting tired and should come on for the run. Razor Royale didn't look to get home over slightly further at Cheltenham last time but had run well until his stamina gave way; he was given a positive ride and was at the back of the leading group turning into the straight. He can pick up another good prize when dropped in trip.
