Racing took place thirty minutes late but there were no shortage of thrills and spills on ground that was described by the jockeys as Good to Soft with dead patches. The complexion of the race was to alter dramatically at the water jump as the early leader, Othermix, departed and brought down Radium while causing significant interference to Wishfull Thinking, who did well to survive in the melee. REVE DE SIVOLA was very deliberate at his early fences but that element of his performance improved during the contest and with a fast gallop, the premium of stamina became apparent. Daryl Jacob was able to produce his mount up the home straight to reel in Rebel Du Maquis and repel all comers close home. Trainer Nick Williams confirmed that his preparations for the race had been badly held up by the weather and that his five-year-old may have blown up close home. He is likely to return to Cheltenham in January. A concession of 8lb to the winner was probably going to be a tough ask for Wishfull Thinking but he was far from disgraced in light of that earlier incident. He did make a couple of minor errors but he seems resilient enough and can win again. Phillip Hobbs suggested that his future lies over three miles. Rebel Du Maquis attempted to steal this race after being left in front after the seventh. The decision of the rider to do so was perhaps understandable under the circumstances but he was as sitting duck for the rest with two to take and his earlier exertions took their toll. It was too early to tell with Radium. He did hit the fourth fence though no questions were being asked of him when he was taken out through no fault of his own. Spirit River fell at Newbury and that seemed still to be fresh in his mind. His fencing had looked laboured at times and he dropped away tamely with four to jump. His fall at the third last looked a particularly nasty one and it remains to be seen as to whether connections or the horse will wish to persevere with this discipline.
