This race has a rich history of winners in the past that has included the likes of Rhinestone Cowboy, Tidal Bay and General Miller so there was plenty of reason to believe that we could see something special coming out of it. Al Ferof was backed as if defeat were out of the question and when allowed a soft lead, it seemed likely that the favourite backers would be collecting. However, having jinked sharply at the fourth flight, Paul Nicholls grey made a real hash of the second last and took a heavy fall. Both rider and horse were reported fine afterwards. Prince Of Pirates, who has the scope to make a chaser, was left with an obvious opportunity to collect and he did not disappoint. Already making headway before the departure of the favourite, he was left in front and when shaken up after the last, completed in the style of a horse that had plenty in hand. Robin De Creuse briefly threatened the winner and may have given him a little more to think about had he not made a small error at the last. A breathing operation appears to have been successful and he should be winning soon. Thoresby kept on into third place though was a respectable distance behind the front two. Master Beau, who is a heavy chasing sort, was fourth. Richmond was the eyecatcher of the race. He was almost brought to a standstill in the trouble than ensued behind the stricken favourite and it is to his credit that he ran on into fifth. It would be no surprise to see Ian Williams step him up significantly in trip following this effort. Ebony Diamond also met with significant interference when making his run so his finishing position is best ignored. Roper took a heavy fall when tiring whilst Robin Will probably needs more time
