An impressive performance from hurdling newcomer (and red-hot favourite) Hidden Universe although the standard of the opposition may suggest it wasn't a really strong race. Sent to the front from the flag-fall, Robbie McNamara got the four-year-old into a good rhythm and despite jumping out to his right at the odd hurdle, he basically had the race won turning for home. Still on the bridle, he made a slight mistake at the last but it didn't halt his progress significantly and he was eased down near the line for a bloodless success. As he was already prominent in the betting for various Cheltenham races, bookmakers were not over-zealous in their reaction and he remains a general 12-1 shot for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. On this evidence the longer Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle would be well within his range in regards to stamina and that more open race may prove to be the better option, although he will need a stiffer examination of his credentials before March. Joe Smooth was not particularly well-fancied for his hurdling bow but ran with promise in second, and in turn was nicely clear of House Rules back in third. The runner-up had a big reputation before his two bumper runs but failed to fire, however this was much more like it.
