A turn of foot settled this race in a matter of strides, as the well-backed MINELLA CLASS nipped away from his rivals turning for home. Having sat in second spot behind front-runner Act Of Kalanisi for much of the race, the winner challenged for the lead at the end of the back straight. His jockey Barry Geraghty had a confident look behind and his mount was soon five lengths clear without even being asked for maximum effort. The decent pace will have helped Nicky Henderson's charge, and he was still quite keen, but this was a very pleasing performance and it certainly puts him in the reckoning for Cheltenham. Which race he will go for is a more cloudy issue, but seeing as he was full of running at the end of a testing two miles on soft ground, only a fool would rule out a crack at the Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle given his trainers' strong hand of two milers. Connections have previously expressed concerns over testing ground for runner-up Megastar, so it was a slight surprise to see him line up here, but he ran a cracker. For a big horse he hurdles extremely well and it was only late in this race that he was a beaten horse. Again, he looks likely to stay further, but he is far from a back number if turning up at one of the festivals over two miles. Act Of Kalanisi set an honest gallop so it was no real surprise to see him drop away fairly tamely turning in, but he will find much easier opportunities than this. The disappointment of the race was Toubab who was held up and crept into the race going nicely. However he quickly went from challenger to beaten horse and was a spent force before two out. His yard had a great record in this race, winning the previous three renewals, but the way he quickly stopped here might suggest that something was bothering him and it may not have just been the testing ground. Red Merlin was struggling from a relatively early stage and never looked like featuring.
